The decision to move a loved one to a care facility can be a difficult choice to make. There can be several reasons behind this, but one of the positive aspects a nursing home facility can offer a loved one is access to round-the-clock care. Most patients who spend time in nursing homes have excellent experiences, however, some are not so fortunate.

So, what does nursing home neglect look like? Since these facilities owe a duty of care to their patients, they are expected to uphold standards that meet certain requirements. These requirements vary but are based on several things, including Illinois state law. Some aspects that are expected to be upheld for nursing home patients are adequate food, shelter and clothing. Bathing needs to be attended to and timely medical care and appropriate supervision by staff and medical providers is extremely important.

Failure to uphold these standards of care can quickly result in injury or even death. Losing a loved one in such a preventable and disheartening way is the challenge too many Cook County families face. If a loved one’s death in a nursing home was premature or otherwise suspicious, all angles should be considered as to what caused their death. Not all deaths in nursing home are due to natural causes.

If a loved one is staying at a nursing home, they have the right to quality care, both in terms of healthcare rights and in the eyes of the law. If a loved one died in a nursing home and you believe it was preventable, you may want to investigate the death carefully.
