Car accidents can be financially taxing

| Jun 10, 2015 | Uncategorized

Car accidents claim many lives every year in Illinois. And, even if car crashes are not fatal, they can inflict serious injuries to the victims, causing permanent disability in many cases. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, accidents primarily occur because of distracted driving or driving under the influence of alcohol. Speeding is also another major reason behind car accidents.

Car accidents can prove to be costly, not only in terms of life but in terms of the expenses that come with the injuries and damage claims. Census reports suggest that an amount close to $1.32 billion is spent each year for expenses related to car accidents, including medical expenses, lost wages and compensation. Even the lawsuits regarding car accident damage claims can become very expensive.

Having valid motor vehicle liability insurance helps motorists cover most of these expenses. According to the law, motorists in Illinois are required to carry liability coverage for both personal injury and property damage caused to others, and also carry uninsured motorist insurance. The insurance value should be $25,000 per person and $50,000 per accident.

For property damage, the minimum amount is $20,000 per person. However, these are just the minimum insurance limits and they may not be sufficient to cover the damages caused to others in a car accident. Victims can sue motorists if their insurance coverage fails to pay for the damages. For this reason, a driver may opt for higher insurance limits that may help protect their financial rights in case of a car crash.
