Human error causes most car accidents

Nothing causes car accidents as often as human error. Mistakes behind the wheel are constant. You will probably see examples of this almost every time you drive. You may witness other drivers using their cellphones, running red lights, breaking the speed limit, drifting out of their lane and much more.

Because human error covers such a wide variety of mistakes and accident causes, it can be linked to more than 90% of crashes. These do all have different root causes. Drunk driving leads to errors like drifting over the centerline or running a stop sign. Fatigued driving leads to mistakes like nodding off behind the wheel. Distracted driving leads to errors, such as drivers who run red lights because they’re looking down at their phone.

So any particular accident may have a unique cause, depending on the specifics of that crash, but the underlying root cause is still human error.

Teen driving statistics

One way that you can see this play out is when you look at teen car accident statistics. For instance, when considering fatal accidents, the rate for teens is higher than any other age group.

But this isn’t actually all that surprising when you consider how inexperienced teen drivers are. Anytime that a young person is learning a new skill, mistakes and errors are inevitable. This is just as true for driving as it is for riding a bike or playing an instrument. Young drivers have such a high crash rate because human error is simply more likely as they build up their experience.

Even if you drive safely, another driver could make a mistake that leads to serious injuries. You need to know how to seek financial compensation.
