Bicycle Accidents in Illinois

Palatine, IL - Cyclist Killed in Hit-&-Run Crash on W Palatine Rd

Bicycle riders are at greater risk of suffering from life-threatening injuries in the event of a crash. In 2015, there were 45,000 reported bicycle accidents across the United States, a decrease from 50,000 the previous year. However, while the overall rate of bicycle accidents declined, bicycle fatalities increased by more than 12% during that same period. There were 720 people killed in bicycle accidents nationwide in 2014, with 27 bicycle fatalities happening in Illinois.

Pedestrians and cyclists have to share the roadways with other motor vehicles. It is the duty of all drivers to safely share the roads with pedestrians and yield the right of way when necessary. Sadly, too many drivers fail to pay attention to areas like crosswalks, and far too often, serious Illinois bicycle accidents are the result. In many cases, drivers ignore or refuse to respect when pedestrians have the right of way, and the resulting injuries in the event of an accident can be catastrophic.
