Bicycle Accidents in Illinois

Oswego, IL - Cyclist Injured in Hit-&-Run at Wolf’s Crossing Rd & Southbury Blvd

While the rate of bicycle collisions has been on the decline, the rate of fatal bicycle accidents has risen dramatically in recent years. There were 45,000 reported bicycle accidents nationwide in 2015 alone. That is a decrease from the previous year, where there were 50,000 reported bicycle collisions. However, during that same time, fatal bicycle accidents increased by nearly 12%. The majority of hit-and-run collisions involve pedestrians or cyclists.

Pedestrians and cyclists have to share the roadways with other motor vehicles. It is the duty of all drivers to safely share the roads with pedestrians and yield the right of way when necessary. Sadly, too many drivers fail to pay attention to areas like crosswalks, and far too often, serious Illinois bicycle accidents are the result. In many cases, drivers ignore or refuse to respect when pedestrians have the right of way, and the resulting injuries in the event of an accident can be catastrophic.
