Madison Co, IL (November 12, 2020) – A multi-vehicle collision left one dead and many others injured in Madison County on Tuesday, November 10.
The crash reportedly occurred on Interstate 55 north of New Douglas Road at around 8:35 p.m. that evening. According to local sources, a 2008 gray Chevrolet Malibu being driven by 27-year-old Laura D. Schmittling of Collinsville, Illinois southbound at the time of the accident. For unknown reasons, the vehicle left the roadway and struck a guardrail.
The Malibu was disabled in the left lane of the highway, and a 2003 red Kenworth Truck Tractor Semi-Trailer swerved to avoid the vehicle, sideswiping a 2009 silver Ford Focus driven by 23-year-old Lacy A. Weiser of Highland, Illinois. A fourth vehicle, a White International Truck Tractor Semi-Trailer driven by 27-year-old Benjamin M. Brunoehler of Sandwich, Illinois, collided with the Malibu.
A passenger in the Malibu suffered fatal injuries and was pronounced dead. Multiple other passengers suffered injuries and were taken to nearby medical facilities for treatment.
An ongoing investigation into the accident is underway.
