Bicycle Accidents in Chicago
A total of 45,000 bicycle accidents were reported in the United States in 2015. While this is a decrease of nearly 5,000 from the previous year, bicycle fatalities increased by more than 12% during that time. A total of 270 cyclists were killed in car accidents nationwide in 2014, and 27 of these bicycle fatalities occurred right here in Illinois. In Chicago alone, an estimated six people are killed in bicycle crashes each year.
Pedestrians and cyclists have to share the roadways with other motor vehicles. It is the duty of all drivers to safely share the roads with pedestrians and yield the right of way when necessary. Sadly, too many drivers fail to pay attention to areas like crosswalks, and far too often, serious Chicago bicycle accidents are the result. In many cases, drivers ignore or refuse to respect when pedestrians have the right of way, and the resulting injuries in the event of an accident can be catastrophic.
