Pedestrian Accidents in Chicago
Pedestrians are at greater risk of suffering serious injuries in the event of a motor vehicle collision. In 2017, a total of 5,977 pedestrians were killed across the country, an average of one death every 88 minutes. There were 4,930 pedestrian accidents reported across Illinois in 2012. That year, a total of 139 pedestrians were killed in traffic accidents across the state, and nearly 4,665 pedestrian sustained injuries.
Pedestrians and cyclists have to share the roadways with other motor vehicles. It is the duty of all drivers to safely share the roads with pedestrians and yield the right of way when necessary. Sadly, too many drivers fail to pay attention to areas like crosswalks, and far too often, serious Illinois pedestrian accidents are the result. In many cases, drivers ignore or refuse to respect when pedestrians have the right of way, and the resulting injuries in the event of an accident can be catastrophic.
