Champaign Co, IL (November 11, 2020) – A woman was injured following a multi-vehicle collision involving an alleged drunk driver in Champaign County on Tuesday morning, November 10.
The crash reportedly occurred on IL-47 near 3300 North at around 4:30 a.m. that morning. Local authorities reported that a truck driven by 45-year-old Nelson Towery of Pekin, Illinois was stopped in the northbound lanes of the highway for unknown reasons with his lights off. A semi-truck driven by 66-year-old Adetunji Adegoke of Woodridge, Illinois swerved in order to avoid colliding with the vehicle.
The trailer being towed by Adegoke detached and blocked traffic on the roadway. A southbound sport-utility vehicle driven by 66-year-old Bettykay Benningfield of Gibson City, Illinois collided with the detached trailer. Benningfield was taken to a nearby medical facility for the treatment of sustained injuries.
Towery was cited for driving under the influence of drugs, improper stopping on a roadway, and operating an uninsured motor vehicle. An ongoing investigation into the crash is currently underway.
Our thoughts are with Bettykay Benningfield and her family at this time. We hope for a full recovery.
