Pedestrian Accidents in Illinois
Pedestrians are extremely vulnerable when traveling the roads of Illinois. In 2017, a total of 5,977 pedestrians were killed in collisions across the country. That year, a pedestrian was killed every 88 minutes on average. The Illinois Department of Transportation revealed that there were 4,930 pedestrian accidents reported across the state in 2012. In these crashes, 139 pedestrians were killed and another 4,665 sustained injuries.
Pedestrians and cyclists have to share the roadways with other motor vehicles. It is the duty of all drivers to safely share the roads with pedestrians and yield the right of way when necessary. Sadly, too many drivers fail to pay attention to areas like crosswalks, and far too often, serious Illinois pedestrian accidents are the result. In many cases, drivers ignore or refuse to respect when pedestrians have the right of way, and the resulting injuries in the event of an accident can be catastrophic.
