Pedestrian Accidents in Illinois
Pedestrians are at greater risk of suffering from life-threatening injuries in the event of an Illinois car crash. In 2017, a total of 5,977 pedestrians lost their lives in collisions across the nation, an average of one death every 88 minutes. Pedestrians are nearly 1.5 times more likely to be killed in a car crash compared to passenger-vehicle occupants. There were 4,930 pedestrian accidents reported across Illinois in 2012, contributing to 139 pedestrian fatalities.
Pedestrians and cyclists have to share the roadways with other motor vehicles. It is the duty of all drivers to safely share the roads with pedestrians and yield the right of way when necessary. Sadly, too many drivers fail to pay attention to areas like crosswalks, and far too often, serious Illinois pedestrian accidents are the result. In many cases, drivers ignore or refuse to respect when pedestrians have the right of way, and the resulting injuries in the event of an accident can be catastrophic.
