Hancock Co, IL (October 27, 2020) – A 32-year-old woman was killed and 19 others were injured following a hayride crash in rural Hancock County on Saturday, October 24.

According to local reports, 41-year-old Wayne York of Nauvoo, Illinois was driving a tractor pulling a wagon on a rural roadway. At around 9 p.m., York lost control of the vehicle and slid into a nearby ravine, causing the hayride to overturn. Three adults and 16 children were on board at the time of the accident.

One woman, later identified as Amy Swinderman of Hamilton, Illinois, was killed in the accident. Nineteen other riders were injured, including a one-year-old. An initial report found that the tractor being used was too small.

York was cited for failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident. An ongoing investigation into the crash is underway.

We would like to offer our deepest condolences to the family of Amy Swinderman at this time. Our thoughts are with the injured victims and their families in hopes of a full recovery.
