Collinsville, IL (October 2, 2020) – A three-vehicle collision near Collinsville on Wednesday, September 30, left one man from O’Fallon, Illinois with life-threatening injuries.

The collision reportedly occurred at around 3:28 p.m. near milepost 10.5 on Interstate 70 (I-55). At the scene, 38-year-old Derrick L. Sweetland suffered injuries and was transported to a medical facility for treatment. Three vehicles were reportedly involved in the collision.

According to initial reports, Sweetland was driving a gray 2013 Volkswagen Passat northbound on the highway at the time of the collision. At the same time, 64-year-old Mary J. Daniels of Highland, Illinois was driving a blue 2007 Honda Pilot in the same direction on the roadway. For unknown reasons, Sweetland’s vehicle lost control and struck the passenger side of the Honda.

The impact caused the Honda to collide with a third vehicle, a white 2020 Toyota Rav 4 driven by 45-year-old Josh A. Cockrell of Kirkwood, Missouri. The Volkswagen overturned multiple times.

The other drivers refused treatment at the scene. An ongoing investigation into the accident is underway.

Our thoughts are with Derrick L. Sweetland and his family at this time. We hope for a full recovery.
