Pedestrian Accidents in Chicago
The majority of pedestrian accidents in Illinois take place in Chicago, the largest urban area in the state. Statistics from the Illinois Department of Transportation found that there were 4,930 pedestrian accidents reported across the state in 2012. There were 139 pedestrians killed in collisions in Illinois that year, and a reported 4,665 pedestrians were injured in Illinois car crashes.
Pedestrians and cyclists have to share the roadways with other motor vehicles. It is the duty of all drivers to safely share the roads with pedestrians and yield the right of way when necessary. Sadly, too many drivers fail to pay attention to areas like crosswalks, and far too often, serious Chicago pedestrian accidents are the result. In many cases, drivers ignore or refuse to respect when pedestrians have the right of way, and the resulting injuries in the event of an accident can be catastrophic.
