Pedestrian Accidents in Chicago

Chicago, IL - Car Collides with Two People on W North Ave Traffic Stop on Cottage Grove Ave

Pedestrians are much more vulnerable to suffering from life-threatening injuries in the event of an accident. In 2017, there were 5,977 pedestrians killed in collisions across the country. That is nearly one death every 88 minutes. In Illinois, there were 4,930 pedestrian accidents reported statewide in 2011, contributing to 4,665 injuries and 139 fatalities. Of those injured, 890 pedestrians suffered critical injuries.

Pedestrians and cyclists have to share the roadways with other motor vehicles. It is the duty of all drivers to safely share the roads with pedestrians and yield the right of way when necessary. Sadly, too many drivers fail to pay attention to areas like crosswalks, and far too often, serious Chicago pedestrian accidents are the result. In many cases, drivers ignore or refuse to respect when pedestrians have the right of way, and the resulting injuries in the event of an accident can be catastrophic.
