Bicycle Accidents in Illinois

Springfield, IL - Cyclist Struck by Vehicle at Rutledge St & Madison St

Illinois is a very attractive state for bicycle riders and has someone for everyone, from the most inexperienced to the most skilled riders. Unfortunately, Illinois is the fifth-worst state in the nation for cyclists. Of the 720 reported bicycle fatalities reported nationwide in 2014, 27 occurred right here in Illinois. On average, more than 50,000 cyclists are injured in collisions across the country. Nearly 71% of bicycle accidents occur in urban areas.

Bicycles are much smaller than other motor vehicles and lack adequate protection for their riders, leaving them at serious risk of injury, and many drivers are constantly distracted by passengers, other drivers, and technology, making them more likely to ignore a cyclist and cause a devastating accident. Riders are at greater risk of suffering life-threatening injuries in the event of an accident, and the resulting damages can change a victim’s life forever.
