Sparta, IL (September 8, 2020) – The passenger of a sport-utility vehicle was killed and two others were injured following a single-vehicle accident in Randolph County on Sunday, September 6.

Reports from the Illinois State Police revealed that the collision occurred near the intersection of Valley Steel Road and Moffat Road in Sparta Township at around 1:20 p.m. that afternoon. The driver of a 2003 Silver Chevrolet SUV was traveling east on Moffat Road. Local sources revealed that the driver was traveling too fast on the gravel roadway, causing the SUV to leave the roadway and overturn.

A passenger from Cutler, Illinois was partially ejected from the vehicle and was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver and another passenger were injured for the treatment of sustained injuries.

The driver of the vehicle was cited for multiple charges, including lacking a valid driver’s license, failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident, improper lane usage, and operating an uninsured vehicle. An ongoing investigation into the crash is currently in progress.

We would like to offer our deepest condolences to the family of the deceased victim at this time. Our thoughts are with the injured victims and their families in hopes of a full recovery.

Deadly Rollover Accidents in Illinois

Sparta, IL - One Killed, Others Injured in Crash at Valley Steel Rd & Moffat Rd

Rollover collisions can be extremely traumatic, and victims are at increased risk of suffering from life-threatening injuries. Rollover crashes have a higher fatality rate than head-on collisions. Rollovers are not incredibly common, only accounting for roughly 2.1% of reported crashes in 2010. However, that same year, 7,600 people in the United States were killed in rollovers, which accounted for nearly 35% of traffic fatalities. Around 69% of those killed in rollovers were unrestrained at the time of the accident.
