Pedestrian Accidents in Illinois

Sangamon Co, IL - Anthony Furgeson Critically Injured at IL-29 & Geary RdThere were 5,977 pedestrians killed in collisions across the country in 2017, an average of one death every 88 minutes. Pedestrians are nearly 1.5 times more likely to be killed on a trip compared to a passenger vehicle occupant. In 2012, there were 139 pedestrians killed in collisions across Illinois. According to the Illinois Department of Transportation, 4,665 pedestrians suffered injuries in collisions in the state that year.

Pedestrians and cyclists have to share the roadways with other motor vehicles. It is the duty of all drivers to safely share the roads with pedestrians and yield the right of way when necessary. Sadly, too many drivers fail to pay attention to areas like crosswalks, and far too often, serious Illinois pedestrian accidents are the result. In many cases, drivers ignore or refuse to respect when pedestrians have the right of way, and the resulting injuries in the event of an accident can be catastrophic.
