Pedestrian Accidents in Illinois
Being involved in a crash can be detrimental, but when a pedestrian is hit by a motor vehicle, they are more likely to sustain life-threatening injuries. Across Illinois, there were 4,930 pedestrian collisions reported across the state in 2012. There were 139 pedestrians killed in collisions in Illinois that year, and another 4,665 pedestrians suffered injuries. Of those injured in pedestrian crashes in Illinois that year, 890 suffered severe or life-threatening injuries.
Pedestrians and cyclists have to share the roadways with other motor vehicles. It is the duty of all drivers to safely share the roads with pedestrians and yield the right of way when necessary. Sadly, too many drivers fail to pay attention to areas like crosswalks, and far too often, serious Illinois pedestrian accidents are the result. In many cases, drivers ignore or refuse to respect when pedestrians have the right of way, and the resulting injuries in the event of an accident can be catastrophic.
