Pedestrian Accidents in Illinois
Pedestrians are much more exposed to roadway dangers, and statistics show that pedestrians are nearly 1.5 times more likely to be killed in a collision compared to passenger vehicle occupants. In 2017, an estimated one pedestrian was killed every 88 minutes across the country. In Illinois, there were 4,930 pedestrian accidents reported statewide in 2012. That year, a reported 4,665 pedestrians suffered injuries in collisions in Illinois.
Pedestrians and cyclists have to share the roadways with other motor vehicles. It is the duty of all drivers to safely share the roads with pedestrians and yield the right of way when necessary. Sadly, too many drivers fail to pay attention to areas like crosswalks, and far too often, serious Illinois pedestrian accidents are the result. In many cases, drivers ignore or refuse to respect when pedestrians have the right of way, and the resulting injuries in the event of an Illinois pedestrian accident can be catastrophic.
