Chicago, IL – Officer Hit by Car During Traffic Stop on Cottage Grove Ave

Chicago, IL (September 22, 2020) – An officer from the Chicago Police Department was struck while at a traffic stop in the Chatham area on the city’s South Side on Saturday, September 19.

The accident reportedly occurred at the 8600 block of Cottage Grove Avenue. At around 9:40 p.m. that evening, the officer pulled over a white Buick sport-utility vehicle. The driver of the Buick fled the stop, striking the officer’s arm in the process.

The officer was transported to a nearby hospital for the treatment of sustained injuries and is believed to be in stable condition. The Buick reportedly fled east on 83rd Street at a high rate of speed and sideswiped a Toyota Camry. The driver of the Buick was later located.

No other injuries were reported. An ongoing investigation into the accident is currently in progress.

Our thoughts are with the injured victim and their family at this time. We hope for a full recovery.

Pedestrian Accidents in Chicago

Chicago, IL - Officer Hit by Car During Traffic Stop on Cottage Grove Ave

All drivers are required to share the road with pedestrians and yield the right of way when necessary. Pedestrians are nearly 1.5 times more likely to be killed in a crash compared to a passenger vehicle occupant. In 2017, there were 5,977 pedestrian fatalities reported across the United States, an average of one death every 88 minutes. More than 137,000 pedestrians were treated in emergency rooms that year for injuries sustained in a vehicle collision.

Pedestrians and cyclists have to share the roadways with other motor vehicles. It is the duty of all drivers to safely share the roads with pedestrians and yield the right of way when necessary. Sadly, too many drivers fail to pay attention to areas like crosswalks, and far too often, serious Illinois pedestrian accidents are the result. In many cases, drivers ignore or refuse to respect when pedestrians have the right of way, and the resulting injuries in the event of an accident can be catastrophic.
