Chicago, IL (September 18, 2020) – Early on Thursday morning, September 17, an employee for the Illinois Department of Transportation was injured after being hit by an alleged drunk driver in Chicago.

The crash reportedly occurred on I-290 EB near Austin Boulevard at around 12:37 a.m. Various IDOT vehicles along with the Illinois State Police were conducting traffic control due to a crash at the time of the accident. Local sources revealed that a 2009 maroon Acura drove through the scene and failed to yield to a stopped vehicle.

The passenger side of the Acura collided with the driver’s side of the ISP patrol car and the IDOT vehicle. Due to the impact, the IDOT vehicle struck the IDOT worker who was standing on the highway. The 46-year-old IDOT truck operator was hospitalized for the treatment of serious injuries.

The driver of the Acura, 33-year-old Terrance K. Barber of Chicago, fled the scene but was later apprehended. Barber was charged for multiple counts, including aggravated driving under the influence and leaving the scene of a personal injury crash.

An ongoing investigation into the accident is currently underway.

Our thoughts are with the injured victim and their family at this time. We hope for a full recovery.
