Fayette Co, IL (August 10, 2020) – There were reported injuries following a motorcycle accident in Fayette County that took place on Interstate 70 on Saturday, August 8.

The crash involved a single motorcycle, and both occupants suffered injuries in the accident. According to local authorities, the motorcycle was traveling on Interstate 70 near milepost 61 at around 8:05 p.m. that evening when the bike struck a deer in the middle of the road. The impact resulted in both occupants being ejected from the bike.

The passenger on the bike was later identified as 45-year-old Athena Gordon of Iuka, Illinois. She was airlifted to a local hospital for the treatment of sustained injuries. The bike’s operator, identified as 34-year-old Thomas Gordon also from Iuka, was taken by ambulance to a nearby hospital before being airlifted to a regional medical facility for treatment.

The resulting injuries are believed to be non-life-threatening. The area of the crash was closed while investigators and emergency responders were present. At this time, no updates on the conditions of the injured parties have been provided.

An ongoing investigation into the crash is being managed by local law enforcement officials, and more details will be released as it continues.

Our thoughts are with Athena Gordon, Thomas Gordon, and their families at this time. We hope for their full recovery.

By design, motorcyclists are more vulnerable to suffering serious injuries in the event of an accident. There is very little protection for riders from the full impact of a severe collision. According to data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, motorcyclists are nearly 27 times more likely to be killed in the event of a crash compared to those traveling in passenger vehicles. The Illinois Department of Transportation reported that there were 311,679 reported vehicle collisions across the state in 2017. Of these accidents, only around 1.1% involved motorcycles. However, motorcycle crashes accounted for roughly 15.4% of fatal injuries and 3.5% of collisions resulting in injuries that year.

Even though motorcyclists are also misrepresented as careless and reckless, statistics show that motor vehicle drivers are more likely to cause serious motorcycle accidents. These cases involve extensive investigation in order to determine who is at fault for the crash, meaning that an experienced legal team is often necessary to construct a strong case. Injured parties should reach out to a qualified Illinois motorcycle crash attorney to discuss their legal options before pursuing an Illinois personal injury claim for lost damages.
