Deadly Pedestrian Crashes in Chicago
Pedestrians are at greater risk of suffering life-threatening injuries in the event of a crash involving a motor vehicle. In 2017, there were 5,977 reported pedestrian fatalities reported in the United States, an average of one death every 88 minutes. That year, more than 137,000 pedestrians were treated in emergency rooms nationwide. In 2012, 149 pedestrians were killed in a reported 4,930 pedestrian accidents across Illinois. In these collisions, 4,665 pedestrians suffered injuries.
The grief and devastation of losing a loved one due to another’s negligence are nearly unbearable. Surviving family members often take on damages resulting from the accident, and they may be able to recover lost compensation by pursuing a wrongful death claim with the help of an experienced Chicago pedestrian injury attorney. In an Illinois wrongful death claim, a representative of the decedent’s estate — usually a close family member — seeks damages from those at fault for the person’s death to obtain compensation for damages.
