Pedestrian Accidents in Illinois

All drivers have a duty to share the roads with others, including pedestrians. However, many drivers fail to live up to this responsibility and cause catastrophic Illinois pedestrian crashes. In 2017, a total of 5,977 pedestrians lost their lives in vehicle collisions across the country, an average of one death every 88 minutes. Another 137,000 pedestrians were treated in emergency rooms for crash injuries that year. In Illinois, a total of 139 pedestrian fatalities were reported in nearly 4,930 accidents across the state.
Pedestrians and cyclists have to share the roadways with other motor vehicles. It is the duty of all drivers to safely share the roads with pedestrians and yield the right of way when necessary. Sadly, too many drivers fail to pay attention to areas like crosswalks, and far too often, serious Illinois pedestrian accidents are the result. In many cases, drivers ignore or refuse to respect when pedestrians have the right of way, and the resulting injuries in the event of an accident can be catastrophic.
