Montrose, IL – Wayne Whalen Injured in Crash with Semi on I-70

by | Jul 23, 2020 | Car Accidents, Injuries

Montrose, IL (July 23, 2020) – A vehicle collision involving a passenger car and a semi-truck left one person injured. The accident occurred east of Montrose on Tuesday afternoon, July 21. Officials from the Illinois State Police reported that the crash occurred at around 3 p.m.

According to initial reports, 62-year-old Wayne Whalen of Martinsville, Illinois was traveling eastbound on Interstate 70 at the time of the accident. At the same time, a semi-truck driven by 22-year-old Ahmed Sankus of Mechanicsburg, Pennsylvania was traveling westbound on the interstate. Reports from authorities revealed that Whalen lost control of his vehicle due to heavy rainfall in the area, causing his vehicle to cross the median of the roadway and enter into the westbound lanes.

Whalen’s vehicle spun-out and was facing westbound on the highway. It was at this time that the semi-truck rear-ended Whalen’s vehicle. Whalen was transported to a local medical facility for treatment following the accident. It is believed that his injuries were non-life-threatening.

The driver of the semi-truck refused treatment at the scene. No further updates on the conditions of the injured party is available. An ongoing investigation into the crash is currently underway.

Our thoughts are with Wayne Whalen and his family at this time. We hope for a full recovery.

Illinois Semi-Truck Accidents

Montrose, IL - Wayne Whalen Injured in Crash with Semi on I-70

Unfortunately, accidents involving large commercial vehicles are much more likely to result in severe or fatal injuries. Millions of trucks cross the nation each year to transport goods, and many of these truckers are forced to meet tight deadlines and work long hours. This is a dangerous combination that can result in exhausted and careless truckers on the nation’s roadways.

These devastating crashes are common right here in the state of Illinois. There were 311,679 vehicle collisions reported across Illinois in 2017. Nearly 3.5% of these accidents involved tractor-trailers, accounting for 9.6% of deadly collisions and 2.7% of injury crashes that year. In 2014, there were 11,000 semi-trucks reported statewide, resulting in 95 reported fatalities.

Large semi-trucks can cause catastrophic injuries in the event of a collision with a passenger vehicle. Truck-driver inexperience is a leading cause of deadly commercial vehicle accidents as companies are trying to fill positions due to a shortage of drivers, and this negligence contributes to serious crashes involving 18-wheelers and commercial vehicles. When the negligence of another driver results in a crash, injured victims should consult with an Illinois trucking injury lawyer in order to recover lost compensation by pursuing a personal injury claim.
