Chicago, IL (July 16, 2020) – A collision involving a motorcycle and another vehicle resulted in one fatality. The accident occurred in the Garfield Park area on Chicago’s West Side. The accident reportedly took place late on Tuesday evening, July 14.
According to local news sources, the crash occurred that night at around 10:40 p.m. Initial reports revealed that a Pontiac Trans Sport minivan was leaving a gas station when it collided with a motorcycle. The van was turning south at the 700 block of North Kedzie Avenue when it was struck by a northbound motorcycle, according to reports from the Chicago Police Department (CPD).
The motorcycle was being operated by a 46-year-old man. He was transported to Mt. Sinai Hospital following the accident. He was later pronounced dead at the facility after succumbing to his injuries. The minivan reportedly contained passengers at the time of the crash. Neither the 27-year-old man driving the van nor his passengers suffered injuries in the accident.
The collision is currently being investigated by CPD’s Major Accidents and Area Three detectives. At this time, there are citations pending against the 27-year-old driver of the van for driving without a valid driver’s license and failing to yield the right of way.
We would like to extend our deepest condolences to the family of the deceased victim at this time.
Deadly Motorcycle Accidents in Chicago
Overall, the rate of fatal collisions has been on the decline across both Illinois and the larger United States. However, one type of fatal collisions has been on the rise. In Illinois, motorcycle fatalities have been increasing in recent years. According to statistics from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), crashes involving cars and light trucks hit an all-time low in 2008. Despite this, motorcycle crashes continue to happen more frequently. There were 956 motorcycle accidents reported in Illinois in 2012, an increase from the previous year. Of these accidents, 148 resulted in fatal injuries.
