Wall collapse kills worker at Chicago Ford plant

by | Jan 7, 2016 | Uncategorized

Structural collapse is one of the most common hazards faced by construction workers in the Chicago area and elsewhere. Whether the work involves removal of a portion of an existing structure or new construction, the unexpected collapse of a wall or ceiling caused by construction negligence poses a serious hazard to all people working on the site. In a recent accident at the Ford Chicago Assembly Plant, one worker was killed and another critically injured when a wall suddenly collapsed.

Chicago police said that a large portion of a wall measuring 8×8 collapsed on top of a 45-year-old construction worker, who was later pronounced dead at a local hospital. A Ford Plant employee working nearby was injured when he tried to assist the first worker; he was reported to be in critical condition with injuries to one of his legs.

This case exemplifies a common pattern in construction accidents. The dead man was employed by an outside contractor, who has not yet been identified. The man who attempted to render assistance was employed by Ford. Other contractors may also have been working on the job, but none have been identified. The cause of the collapse may ultimately be attributed to negligence on the part of the deceased man’s employer, one or more Ford employees, one or more employees of another contractor or some combination of all three.

Anyone who has been injured or lost a loved one in a work-related accident may wish to seek the advice of a lawyer who specializes in workplace accident cases, especially accidents involving fatalities. A knowledgeable attorney can help determine the identities of the parties who may be legally liable for any damages, including lost income, medical expenses, pain and suffering and loss of companionship. In addition, an experienced attorney can also provide a helpful analysis of the facts of the case, applicable laws and an estimate of the likelihood of recovering damages.
