Large percentage of Chicago area nursing homes have deadly fungus

Many Chicago area families have loved ones who are older. As our population continues to age, the need for good care increases. Having to place a loved one in a nursing home is a hard thing for many families to have to go through. Although most people want to live at home as long as possible, many times it comes to a point where they must be placed in a nursing facility. Most of these facilities are safe and take good care of their residents, but, occasionally, these residents face serious neglect and abuse.

A scary situation is making its way through many Chicago area nursing homes. There is a drug resistant super bug that is affecting half of all Chicago nursing homes. This fungus is called Candida auris and is tricky to kill even with hospital grade disinfectants. The most serious cases of this fungus are unfortunately found in nursing facilities. It can be found on a person's skin, medical devices that are used every day, such as blood pressure cuffs, and throughout patient rooms. More than 150 people have become sick and the death rate can be as high as 60%. The Chicago area currently has a quarter of the Candida auris cases in the U.S. It is not clear which nursing homes are affected.

Placing a loved one in a nursing home can be a difficult decision for any family. If a family believes that their loved one has been affected by nursing home neglect, they may want to speak with a legal professional skilled in nursing home abuse. An attorney understands that many nursing facilities are understaffed, which can cause problems for residents. These are the situations where unexpected injuries can occur.

Families who have been affected by nursing home abuse have the legal right to hold these places accountable. Compensation may be available for medical expenses, funeral expenses, pain and suffering and other damages.
