Increased police patrols in Illinois aim to prevent car accidents

Unfortunately, car accidents occur every day, which is why it is important to keep in mind that legal protections are available to car accident victims.

This year's Memorial Day weekend is expected to be the busiest for travelers in 10 years. In fact, AAA is predicting a 5 percent increase in the number of holiday travelers compared to last year and AAA also estimates that the number of holiday travelers during Memorial Day will be 42 million.

As a result, the Illinois State Police is reminding drivers of safety precautions to help prevent car accidents. Authorities are enforcing common traffic violations that result in car accidents including driving under the influence, speeding, distracted driving and seat belt use. Authorities are instituting policies to increase police presence on the roadways. One initiative aims to have a trooper every 20 miles in Illinois including on I-57 and I-80.

Drivers are encouraged to obey traffic laws and keep their eyes on the road to help avoid car accidents. Last year, the Illinois State Police issued 3,036 speeding tickets during the holiday period from Friday to Monday and made 96 DUI arrests during the same time period.

When a negligent driver has carelessly caused a car accident that results in harm and injuries to the victim, a personal injury claim for damages may help victims pursue remedies for the damages they have suffered.

Victims of car accidents may be able to recover compensation for their medical expenses, lost wages and pain and suffering damages in a car accident. A personal injury claim for damages holds a negligent driver, such as a distracted driver or driver driving under the influence, accountable while at the same time protecting the victim who has been harmed by the negligent driver's careless actions.
