Medical malpractice: what is informed consent?

While a person in Cook County generally knows what to expect at a routine doctor's appointment, when it comes to more complex procedures, a person can be left in the dark. However, understanding what will be done and why is important. After all, certain procedures can leave a person in a worsened condition if they are not performed with due care. Patients deserve to know what to expect -- what the medical procedure is, why it is needed and what risks, complications and alternatives are involved.

Two women die after treatment at area dialysis centers

When a person experiences kidney failure, they may need to be put on dialysis. Dialysis purifies a person's blood, a role normally performed by one's kidneys. However, recent media reports highlight some of the potential dangers at dialysis centers.

Victims of medical malpractice have legal protections

Misdiagnosis errors can have serious consequences for victims. A correct and timely diagnosis can have a significant impact on the quality of treatment and care the patient receives. When a medical condition is not correctly diagnosed or there is a delayed diagnosis, it can be the difference between suitable care and treatment and devastating complications that can result in death in some circumstances.

Construction worker injured in fall north of Chicago

Workers and their families are protected in circumstances of workplace accidents. In a nearby community north of Chicago, a steelworker was recovering from a fall from the seventh floor to the sixth floor of a courthouse building under construction. A construction crane had to be used to transport the man to the ground floor where he could be placed on an ambulance. The high-angle rescue, along with the use of a basket to remove the construction worker, was utilized by emergency personnel. The construction worker was immobilized and transported to a local medical care facility. His injuries were considered non-life threatening.

Rise in automobile accident numbers linked to smartphone use

Studies are done on a regular basis to determine the cause of car accidents and to try and find ways to reduce their frequency. For drivers in Illinois and across the nation, this information should be factored in when heading out on the road as a driver, passenger, bicyclist or pedestrian. Because a person can become a victim of a crash without warning, knowing how it happened is just as vital as understanding what they will face in its aftermath. This is particularly important if it is a fatal car accident.
